Kids' Music You Can Love: World Music

Putumayo, Putumayo, Putumayo

Okay...that's basically what it boils down to. Let me back up. To begin with, exposing your kids to music from around the world is fabulous. Let me tell you why.

Firstly, it often exposes your children to foreign languages.

Secondly, it exposes your children to different musical languages (meaning different scales, instruments, and styles they wouldn't commonly hear). Both of these aspects of world music help wire your child's brain differently and give their ears a much broader range of understanding. They will be better students and better musicians, and in my opinion better people for having been exposed to music from other lands.

Yes, I said I believe it makes them better people, too, and that's because listening to world music teaches us to respect people who are not like us, something I think we all need to learn again and again in life.

You can find beautiful world music in lots of places (including Kindermusik CDs). But I think the best is Putumayo Kids, my absolute favorite series of folk tunes from around the world (including a collection of American folk tunes). It's great stuff, and fun for grown-ups, too. Oh, and did I mention that Do-Re-Me & You! just picked up a couple of their albums for their special get-ready-for-Christmas mini-catalogue. I nearly fell over I was so excited when I found that out a couple weeks ago. We'll have the CDs for you to listen to (along with some of the other new Do-Re-Me & You! releases) at the Do-Re-Me & You! Halloween Party sponsored by our studioi Oct. 28th. Call (913) 322-2151 or email kindermusikwithjoy@gmail.com for details.
